Ruggi Desktop Suite 0.1.1

The suite on other desktops

The Cinnamon applets only run on Cinnamon. The calendar, and a few panel items, are also available elsewhere through a small portable command, ruggi, which every desktop front-end calls. The calendar logic exists once, so every desktop shows the same dates, calendar systems and holidays. Nothing needs root; nothing goes over the network except the ICS or CalDAV feeds you add yourself.

Honest status. "Tested" means it was run on a Linux machine. "Written" means it follows the desktop's documented format and passes static checks, but it could not be run inside that desktop, so expect a first-run fix. If you try one and it works or breaks, tell me which desktop and version.

Install the core and the calendar (Linux)

Needs one of cjs, gjs or node for ruggi, and Tk for the calendar window.

tar xzf ruggi-desktops-0.1.0.tar.gz
cd ruggi-desktops-0.1.0./install-user.sh
ruggi today --text
ruggi-calendar --popup --packs christian-western

Then follow the README of your desktop in targets/.

Desktops

Any desktop (Linux, macOS, Windows with Tk) tested

The month calendar as a window, a pop-up near the pointer, or a borderless card on the desktop; up to three calendar systems, opt-in holiday packs, ICS events.

ruggi-calendar

Tested on Linux in all three modes, dark and light. Tk 8.6 does not shape Arabic script (Hebrew is handled); use a native front-end on KDE or GNOME for those.

sway, Hyprland, i3 written, not run there

Waybar modules and i3blocks blocks: date with a month tooltip, keyboard layout and lock keys, GPU, network rate and VPN. Window rules and key binds for the calendar. Thunar, Dolphin and Nautilus right-click entries.

targets/waybar, i3blocks, sway, file-actions

Output formats checked by tests; not run inside a real Waybar, sway, i3 or Hyprland session.

XFCE written, not run there

Generic Monitor scripts for the panel (date with a month tooltip; click opens the calendar), keyboard, GPU, network. Thunar custom actions.

targets/xfce

Output format checked; not run in an XFCE panel.

KDE Plasma 6 written, not run there

A plasmoid for a panel (today's date, click for the month) and for the desktop (the month card). Arabic and Persian shape correctly.

targets/kde

Package structure and settings keys checked; the QML has not been loaded by Plasma yet.

GNOME Shell 46 to 48 written, not run there

A top-bar extension: today's date, click for the month grid with calendars, holidays and events.

targets/gnome

Syntax and schema checked; not loaded by GNOME Shell yet. Calendar only.

MATE written, not run there

The Tk calendar as a panel launcher and an optional desktop card, plus a shortcut. (MATE panel applets are plug-ins in C, Vala or Python; there is no native applet.)

targets/mate

Launcher files validated; not run in a MATE session.

macOS written, not run there

A SwiftBar menu-bar item and an Übersicht desktop month card. Needs Node.js (brew install node).

targets/macos

Not run on a Mac.

Windows written, not run there

A Rainmeter desktop month card and a package with a bundled portable Node.js, built by a script that checks the Node download's SHA-256 before using it.

targets/windows

Not run on Windows. No context-menu entries, no Tk window.

What does not move

The window-manager extensions (tiling, workspace grid, hot corners, blur, panel auto-hide) are Cinnamon features; other desktops have their own. Most of the other applets and desklets are Cinnamon-only for now; the calendar comes first everywhere.
