AI subscription checker

Add up what you pay for AI chat subscriptions, see the cost per message and per year, compare it with what the same usage could cost through an API, and work through a checklist on whether a free or local model would do.

1. What you pay

Type the name and the monthly price from your own bill or account page. This page does not know any current prices and will not guess them. Prices are in whatever currency you use.

SubscriptionPrice per month

2. How much you use them (all together)

3. Token assumptions for the API comparison (edit these)

The two prices above are placeholders, not real prices. Replace them with the per-million-token prices from the pricing page of the model you would actually use. The list is a convenience: (checked ).

Chat apps usually send the earlier conversation again with every new message, which is why the history box exists. Set it to 0 if you start a fresh chat for each question. Subscriptions also include things an API does not (apps, file upload, search, image tools, higher limits), so this compares text volume only.

Would a free or local model do? A checklist

Tick what is true for you. The more you tick in the first group, the more a smaller local or free model is worth a try; the second group are reasons to keep paying.

How it works

Yearly total = the sum of your monthly prices × 12. Messages per month = messages per day × days. Cost per message = monthly total ÷ messages per month, and cost per hour = monthly total ÷ hours. API estimate per message = ((message + history tokens) × input price + answer tokens × output price) ÷ 1,000,000, times messages per month. It uses only numbers you typed. If you use the subscription for much more than text chat (files, images, voice, agents), the estimate understates what you get.
